FTA – Fault Tree Analysis

FTA (Fault Tree Analysis) is an analysis method used primarily in safety and reliability engineering to understand how systems can fail. It helps identify the best ways to reduce risk and find the specific events that trigger a major incident (top event).

The method uses Boolean logic to combine a series of lower-level events, being a “top-down” approach. It is an essential tool in high-risk industries, such as automotive, aerospace, nuclear, or petrochemical, providing a visual representation of complex causal relationships.

Essential Information:

  • Duration: 2 days (with the possibility of a one-day Follow-up session for practical projects)
  • Recommended participants: 5-10
  • Level: Advanced / Risk and Reliability Analysis

Target Audience:

  • Technical staff from production, quality, engineering, or maintenance departments.
  • Middle management from Quality and Production sectors.
  • Personnel involved in risk analyses, especially in the Automotive industry.
  • Personnel from Logistics or Customer Support involved in technical investigations.
  • Entrepreneurs and Consultants.
  • Employees interested in developing advanced diagnostic skills.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the purpose and benefits of the Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) methodology.
  • Use Boolean logic symbols (AND/OR gates) to model failure scenarios.
  • Construct a Fault Tree from the top event down to the primary causes.
  • Identify critical failure points and evaluate their impact on the system.
  • Integrate FTA with other tools like FMEA and 8D for a complete analysis.

Course Structure

  • Introduction to FTA: Definitions, history, and scope of application.
  • Symbols and Boolean Logic: Using logic gates in the visual representation of defects.
  • Constructing the Fault Tree: Methodological steps from the top event to the primary causes.
  • Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis: Evaluating probabilities and critical failure points.
  • Integration with other tools: Correlating FTA with FMEA and 8D.
  • Practical exercises: Performing an FTA analysis on a real or simulated system.

Organizational Benefits

  • Deep Understanding: Clear visualization of factors leading to systemic problems.
  • Efficient Prioritization: Optimal use of resources by targeting the most likely failure scenarios.
  • Risk and Cost Reduction: Identifying and eliminating weak points before costly defects occur.
  • Increased Reliability: Improving system performance through well-founded safety measures.
  • Informed Decisions: Providing a mathematical and logical basis for the decision-making process.
  • Partner Confidence: Demonstrating rigorous risk management to customers and authorities.

The course will conclude with a multiple-choice examination, and participation statements or graduation certificates will be issued, as applicable.
