8D (Eight Disciplines) is a structured and orderly process for finding the best solution to solve problems, but also for eliminating the possibility of their recurrence. The method is based on going through eight logical stages (disciplines), being a globally recognized standard, especially in industries with rigorous requirements such as automotive and aerospace.
Originally developed to manage production defects, the 8D method has proven to be extremely useful in any field of activity, offering an approach based on data and the collaboration of a multidisciplinary team to move from symptoms to sustainable preventive actions.
Essential Information:
- Duration: 2 days (with the possibility of a one-day Follow-up session for practical projects)
- Recommended participants: 5-10
- Level: Advanced / Problem Solving Methodology
Target Audience:
- Technical staff from production, quality, engineering, maintenance, or management.
- Professionals from various fields (commercial, financial services, healthcare, IT, etc.).
- Personnel from logistics or customer support.
- Personnel involved in resolving complaints in the Automotive industry.
- Entrepreneurs and Consultants.
- Employees interested in developing complex problem-solving skills.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the training, participants will be able to:
- Understand and apply the 8D methodology to solve complex problems.
- Coordinate or participate effectively in multidisciplinary problem-solving teams.
- Use specific tools (Ishikawa, 5 Why, Pareto, etc.) to identify root causes.
- Define and implement immediate containment actions, as well as long-term corrective actions.
- Validate the effectiveness of implemented solutions and prevent their recurrence.
- Correctly document the entire process in a standard 8D report.
Course Structure
- Introduction to 8D: History, principles, and when to apply the method.
- The 8 Disciplines (Steps):
- D1: The Team – Selecting the right experts.
- D2: Problem Description – Clearly defining the situation.
- D3: Containment Actions – Protecting the customer in the short term.
- D4: Root Cause – Identifying and verifying the real cause.
- D5: Choosing Corrective Actions – Planning long-term solutions.
- D6: Implementation and Validation – Verifying the effectiveness of solutions.
- D7: Preventing Recurrence – Changing the system to avoid repetition.
- D8: Recognizing Success – Official closure and congratulating the team.
- Tools: 5W&2H, Brainstorming, Pareto, Control Charts, Action Plan, MSA, Ishikawa, 5 Why, IPO, Flowchart, Prioritization Matrices / Pugh, Poka Yoke, DOE, Pilot Test, FMEA, Control Plan.
- Summary. Discussions. Course closure.
Organizational Benefits
- Systematic Approach: Provides a clear structure for managing critical situations.
- Reduced Recurrence: Eliminating fundamental causes to avoid repeating mistakes.
- Communication Efficiency: Facilitating internal and external dialogue (with customers) through a standardized format.
- Reduced Non-Quality Costs: Decreasing expenses generated by scrap, returns, and complaints.
- Customer Satisfaction: Demonstrating the capability to treat problems professionally and transparently.
The course will conclude with a multiple-choice examination, and participation statements or graduation certificates will be issued, as applicable.
